The Quad God may be moving up a level.
Star American figure skater Ilia Malinin teased an unprecedented quintuple jump in a pre-Olympics press conference on Tuesday.
"Maybe, maybe not. We'll see. I'm thinking about it. Thinking not doing it, or doing it. I keep you guys on your toes," he said, per Reuters' Lori Ewing and Agnieszka Flak.
Malinin, 22, is among the most dominant athletes in the world. The two-time reigning men's world champion has not lost an event since a Grand Prix in November 2023.
He previously said he'd hold the quintuple jump — which he is rumoured to have landed in training — until after the Olympics.
However, he may not wait after all.
"Physically, I’m ready. If the time is right, you might see it," he said.
Malinin, of Fairfax, Va., was the first and still only skater to complete a quadruple axel in international competition, leading to his self-anointed nickname. He's also the only figure skater ever to land seven quads in one program.
He will take the ice for the men's portion of the team event in Milan from Feb. 7-8 before the men's competition itself takes place Feb. 10 and 13.
